During the summer, Miner Greg and Semiminer accompanied me to the mysterious Wallkill Lead Company Mine located in the Shawangunk Mountains. After much poking around, the fruits of our labor yielded some impressive finds. Unfortunately the high water table prevented access into the main adit but the visit was definitely unique and worthwhile.

Please see http://www.ironminers.com/mineforum/viewtopic.php?t=20045 to view the trip photos.

nice photos mike! i noticed the hand drill marks you mentioned. i know most of these mines you guys go in are way before mechanical rock drilling, however one way you can tell is if the drill mark is less than 2 feet long it was hand drilled. they never went deeper than a 2 foot cut in a shift cause it would take too much time. think about that..... this mine was driven 2 feet at a time!

Another way to tell a hand drilled hole from a mechanically drilled hole is how straight the hole is. If the hole is uneven, it is drilled by hand. If the hole is straight and even, it is drilled mechanically. Therefore, drill holes make for an excellent indicator as to the age of the mine.

Yes, 2 feet at a time is a very slow process. And being that these are hard rock mines, this is a considerable effort and a lot of time put into each drill hole. The life of a miner in those days was a tedious job..

I also love those ruins and stone foundations at this mine.. It looks like this was quite an operation for it's day..
