Prior to 1897, the Sterling Hill orebody was worked by three separate companies. The two properties to the southwest are generally known as the Noble Mine and the Passaic Mine. At the northwest side of the Passaic Mine is an old tunnel, with trackage, and intact compressed air pipe. The Passaic Tunnel is driven for a couple hundred feet before meeting with an ore pass known as the "Glory Hole". It is a shaft leading to a bottomless pit, one you can fill with all the mine wasterock, but still it remains a bottomless pit.
