I have not been there. Do you have any details on what you have found there? It might be something to put on our list as we have been wanting to start documenting Pennsylvanian Iron Mines..

This would make a good addition to the excellent slide show collection of the most professionally run hard rock mining documentation site and forum on the net. PM Greg some directions and I'm sure a great photo tour and history will show up here on Ironminers. Pennsylvania iron ore mines can't be left "in the dark!"

i know there was a complaint about open mines there sent to the office of surface mining. but since it wasnt coal related it "wasnt their problem" so people are aware of them but for now i guess nothing is going to be done about them..... interesting. but it would be good to check them out before its too late, like thats never happened before

The mines are located in Raab county park. Two of them are gated for sure, although I think the park service lets profesonals go in if they ask. And I know two are open. The big pit is easy to acess in the park too. I can find exact directions tonighrt.l

I am familiar with the York Mine as well as a few others in the immediate area. There are some interesting minerals that come from this general region and I would like to check them out soon. Last I knew, private tours were given in York Mine and thus, I believe it is protected because of its bats. I highly doubt there will be any attempt to permanently close this mine for this reason.

There are certainly a lot of historic iron mines of important historical significance in PA. Unfortunately we have only briefly touched on some of these. We really should look into a thorough documentation of some of these sites.

Does anyone have any pictures that they would be willing to share? We'd love to see anything anyone can come up with.

The Iron Mine Group which is the host for this site, is more into hard rock mines in New York , New Jersey etc.

Chris, Banks, MIke A and others are Abandoned Mine Research, sometime called UGM (underground miners ). Their interest is more with Anthracite Coal, but they are closer to the York mine.

One group has interest and the other has location.

The fact is if it would work out both groups will be there at the same time.
