While out for a walk near the Peter Mine, I came across this. Pretty solid piece of ??? Anyway, does anyone know what it is?

Hmmm, I have never seen this before. Did it look like it was cast recently? Perhaps it has something to do with the cleanup efforts?

Can't tell, Mike. It is located near the intersection of Cannon Mine Road in the brush. Strange sight.

But this does not actually go down below the base? Is it hollow to the best you can tell?

Since this thread was on the Peter Mine, I thought I would upload a few pictures from a recent hike to the Hewitt, Snyder and Hope Mines. For those familiar with the infamous story of the Hope Mine, I did not encounter any ghosts, paranormal activity although I will admit that the area is very desolate and eerie. The first picture is of the Hope Mine.

The probable drainage tunnel at Hope Mine is still doing its job.

I forget if the Hewitt is on the right of the old mine road or the left. But here is the mine on the left or north of the road.

And lastly, the mine to the south of the mine road.

Thanks for sharing Jackstraw. It is indeed an eerie place. Did you make out the continuation of the adit tunnel at the bottom of the Hope shaft?

I did not see a continuation of the tunnel, Mike. Either the water level was too high or I just missed it. I wonder if the water level was down, whether it would be possible to raft into the large flooded chamber.

By the way, remediation activities have taken place at the base of the woods road that leads up to the Hope shaft. There is a fenced area with two flooded pits and trucked in fill and rock.

I worked with a guy who in the 80's roped down the hope mine to the water, indeed he said there is a tunnel. he walked in and found a dead bear at the end of it. you cant see it from above because of the angle, but thats where all the water drains out from.

I have seen similar things that are usually close to pre 1950 houses- vent shaft and secondary escape on a burried bomb shelter. I had one in my back yard in Hollis NH. They are very cool in a kind of iron mine way. I have found a cast shaft like that one in N. Westchester, NY. It sticks out the top of a big, man-made burm. I cant find a horizontal entrance. I'm 6'2" 220, going to have to pass on going down. They usually contain pull-tab beer cans and dead animals.
