I thought this tunnel was very cool. I chatted with the gentleman pictured who is performing structural integrity work on the bore. There are some major drainage issues to be worked out before trains can roll through here again.

By the way, there is an iron mine near the east portal of the tunnel. A filled in adit and shaft, many pits, some collapsed and water filled.

Seen is the filled in shaft, uphill from the adit.

Very neat... Been a while since I have been there, have they done any work in the tunnel yet? I'd also be curious how far they have gotten on refurbishing this line. I saw some photos on YouTube where someone was riding a quad on the old Lackawanna Cutoff on the portion where they removed the trees.

I was definitely in a railroad frame of mind the last time I visited Byram Tunnel about 10 years ago -- I never even thought to look for a mine here. Do you have any pictures of the adit by chance?

Hi Guys,

Greg. I don't think any structural work has been done on the tunnel. More concrete reinforcement will have be done in the middle where the fault is. And I suppose some other drainage issues will have to be addressed. And the right of way heading west once through the bore looks awful and is very wet.

Mike. MikeDC told me about the exploration which can be seen along the trail that runs towards the east portal. You'll have to take my word that this is an adit. There is a trench leading up to it with a cone shaped tailings pile in front of it.

I have heard about that mystery adit being near the tunnel as well. But like Miner Mike said, I was also in a railroad frame of mind when I was there last and never looked for an adit.

Very neat! I suppose the adit predates construction of the mighty Cutoff. I've walked at least two thirds of the Cutoff on foot. It is an interesting yet very gradual way of taking in how much construction really went on there.
