Hi,

Nice pix! I was there very early this morning. I stuck my head into the opening in the mine and shone my flashlight in. Large flooded stope with about three to four feet of water inside. Swimming in was not on my priority list today. There is a narrow gauge rr that runs alongside the brook to the upper workings. And I believe I found the remains of an adit. I'll upload pics later on.

Thank you very much for the heads up on this very cool place!

Question, while I was in the area, I drove down Ninham Road-not Court. Near it's intersection with Farmers Mills Road, I found a small mining complex with half a dozen prospect pits. Looked very old. Ring a bell?

I do remember reading about a site near White Pond. I am attaching a link that mentions a site that was a mile or so from Boyds Corner. Boyds Corner is now underneath the small Boyds Resivoir (301 & Niham Rd.) I'll post the better source if I find it

Looking inside the flooded stope. I could not figure out how high the ceiling was. Doing so would involve swimming inside. And although I do not think arsenic ingestion through the skin would be a possibility, I passed on the opportunity.

From what I've read, it does seem like they were seriously looking for the "good stuff" in the 1850's. Looks like the comercial arsenic operation was the horizontal adit at the bottom of the hill 1906-1908. The first pic shows a digging at the bottom of the stream wash out. I speculate they were looking for placers because they knew were all the ore was and it wasn't in the stream bed???? The other 2 pics are of a trench cut and pile(looking up-down). I had thougt it could have been a heap-leach but most likely part of the light guage rail set up????. It doesnt seem to come or go anywhere but I'm no expert.
It also might be a prospect trench for placers???? Is it a surface cut to the bedrock in the alluvial material? I believe the well worn flat top to be partially from the mountain bikes.

Jackstraw, great find on the LGR. Over the summer I had found an ore crusher of some sort- didn't see it last time. Probably still there- way too heavy

Jonnyblade, welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing some great information and pictures.

Miner CT Mike and I had visited Pine Pond Mine a couple years ago but lacking appropriate gear, did not venture inside. Arsenic is very poisonous and can be absorbed orally and via inhalation. While you'll likely not be compelled to drink the water or snort arsenopyrite dust off the stope walls, I suppose it is possible to inhale some dust particles of arsenopyrite that are kicked up in the air.

Jackstraw, great discovery of the rail! Whereas a section of rail at a mine in a state like Nevada would be quickly overlooked, in a state like New York or New Jersey, it is indeed a rare and important piece of industrial archeology.

An interesting article that I dug up. Apparently, two people suffered from arsenic poisoning from contaminated well water rather then two people dying from arsenic poisoning.
