Here's a few pictures from my trip to one of the small iron ore mines near me.

The pics didn't load the way I wanted but here is a description of them:
1. Spikes in what was left of a tie in the main haulage way. The haulage way was about 5ft. high by 8ft. wide with no timber.
2. This was one of a couple small drifts. It was about 3ft high by 5ft wide. There was some timber for support about every 10ft. There was also evidence of trackage in both the drifts even though they were so small.
3. This was the only support that I saw that a wedge had been driven for a tight fit. All the timber was all different kinds of wood. I even found one support that was cedar. All the timber was in the small drifts.
4. This is in the main haulage way. It is where the miners cut out the bottom to place track ties. You can see a few pieces of tie remnants.

I have some video too but I'm trying to figure out how to do a little editing. I need to go back with some better equipment. I didn't expect this mine to be accessible so I was ill equipped for much underground photography or exploring.

Nice find, must have been a nice surprise when you found it was accessible! When does the mine date from? If you have a mac Imovie is very easy to use for editing videos.

There are literally hundreds of small mines like this in the area. They date from the 1890's to about 1930. This particular mine is somewhere near 1905-1907. Another interesting thing is that this mine was completely dug with pick and shovel. The vein was not in solid rock but in layers of shale that did not require blasting.

Here's a few short videos of this mine. Sorry for the quality and lighting, they were done with a cell phone. Stay tuned for more videos of mines from this area.

Cool pictures.

It looks like a wet mine, kinda looks like it's turning into a cave with all the crusting on the old spike.

Yeah it is kinda wet. Not really any standing water though. In one of the videos you can see a small stalactite that has started forming on the rib.
