hey rock boys, did they use locomotives to move the "ore" cars around underground or did they just push them? if they used them, what did they look like. where they little or like the one we have? see ya,

It really depends on the mine. Most of the mines iron mines in our area were closed before the 1900's, so most of them were mule powered. The larger operations used steam powered hoist cable while others used steam powered engines. Modern operations used electric engines.

Above in an image of one of engines used to pull the ore cars in the Mt Hope Mine. This is an electric battery operated one.

Above is an engine used in the Scrub Oaks mine. This is electric cable powered.

Wow, wouldn't it be cool to have a section of the website that focuses on ore haulage and other mining methods? I have a few more old pictures to put on the site when we add Sterling Mine to the site. In fact, you should take a picture of me actually tipping the ore car! How many of us miners can say they actually tipped one? hehe. :D

I love the pictures and if I had more time I would work in the Sterling Mine with Miner Mike. Gotta love the mules!
