heres some photos taken when the old brooks model mine was open at nayaug park in scranton. we were inside there back in 2003 when they were going to reopen it, however because of newer mine laws the mine had to be sealed. fortunately, we didnt take any pictures as we didnt have a camera with us but it looked exactly like it does in these photos. the mine car is still inside full of coal!

You have got to keep it in context. I can't speak for underground mines.

But in many factories in the 50's and 60's, engineers and management were required to wear white shirt and tie.

A special feature of the park is the Brook's mine, which is an opening into the outcropping of one of the veins of coal, and shows the virgin coal as it lies under the rock roof, and how it is reached in the process of mining. It is an invaluable object lesson, and will increase in interest as the years advance. The entrance to the mine has been walled up with masonry, and made entirely safe, at considerable expense, the gift to the park of Mr. Rees T. Brooks, who began his career here as a miner boy and worked his way up until he became one of our most successful mine operators

Ya! Everyone wore ties back then I guess. That guy looks like he was moved there like Milton in "Office Space."

"I used to have a desk by the window where I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, and I told Bill if they moved my desk one more time I would set the building on fire. Ok, ok but, this is the last straw."

besides the obvious all the place needs is a second opening. How far down is the mine...10 15 feet. Hell we could do that lol But yeh good location. maybe not as solely a tour. But a great place to lay some track and run an electric lokie. And an inside place to store it. Hummm now if someone we know actually owned one ....

yea we were back in there around 2002-3 sometime. it goes in about 150 feet and is no more than 20 feet deep at the back. i have heard rumors it was bootlegged back behind the manakin miner.... who is still in there by the way. the mine car is still inside full of coal as well. it goes in, makes a circle around a coal pillar and comes back out.

Great pics, thanks for posting them. Seems like a waste of coal to leave a full cart of it in there. The old photos also look kind of eery too, it would probably make a great setting for a horror film.

The pics take me back in old times. Feels good to see these pictures. And, yes the mine can be probably used for a horror film shooting scene.
