This was a small mine in TN that was supposed to be producing 250 tons a day when it closed. The coal was sold to TVA for a power plant. Judging by the size of the skidder tire I'd say this seam was about 28". The mine was shut down in the 70's by the inspectors for not having a non arcing drill.

I think that part of the world has the corner on Low Coal.. The Beckly (WVA) mine museum had a roof bolter for about 24 to 28" coal.

Here's a couple more from the same mine. The first is inside. The miner is George Wilson, he was the owner. The second is an overall view of the whole operation.

This is the last picture I have of this mine. Some interesting things to look for are in the second picture on the right side near the stack of concrete blocks is an electric mantrip. Also in the same picture on the left is a coal loader similar to the one OVCC rescued from the eagle mine. In the last photo you can see the mantrip again just above the red and white barrel on the right. Doug, about all we have had in my area are small family mines. It was much like the anthracite region in that from the late 1800's to the depression there were company mines then after that it was all bootlegging, Southern Appalachian style. There are no active underground mines in the area now but that may be changing.

So, there are still family mines? How profitable could they be?
