if you look closely in front of the steam dome, there is a cylinder type device on its side. this is a steam generator. this makes power to run the lamps! also notice that there is no flange on the center wheels. this allowed it to navigate tighter radius curves.

Image

The lokie under cover.

Image

Look carefully you can see where the spring frame came up and hit the boiler. its more pronounced on the other side but the flash kind of makes it hard to see. this is evidence that the lokie was dropped. also it would need alot of boiler work as it probably comprimized the structural integraty of it.

Image

Exact controls as the one in ashland....... i can operate this bad boy :D

Fire box and boiler tubes will need some work!

Image

oil injector for all the moving parts looks good!

and it even has a hudson coal co mine car, how cute

B/W photos of Hudson Coal 61 shown above. They were listed as taken in 1962 and it looks like it was on display at the D&H building in Honesdale, PA.

All steamers with electric lights had that by the steam dome, it was a small turbine. Also, the blind drivers are nothing special. Union Pacific actually had blind drivers on it's 4-12-2s.

I see the original post was 2006. Has anything been done with the lokie yet? There is more than enough talent on this forum to get it going again, it's just a question of funding.

No, she is still in the same condition. It would be nice to see her get a spruce-up. I don't think her current owners would care to see her operational but a cosmetic resto would probably be welcomed. Eventually I'd like to see her wind up at the Gravity Slope site in Archbald.

Those are great pics! I heard it was once at the canal museum in Honesdale but never saw any photos of it. Cool, thanks for sharing that. I'd also like to see it at gravity but that process is going very slowly. Typical politics. The GE mine motor we aquired a few years ago was owned by the Hudson coal co. Would be neat to get them together. There was a huge ammount of Hudson and other stuff in Baumans scrap yard before it met the torch in the mid 2000s we were supposed to get some more of that stuff but it never happened. I'm still a bit sour over that one......

The pictures are currently on ebay (they aren't mine). Do I even want to know what was in Baumans?

A couple dozen electric mine locomotives, including one that was converted into a portable underground saw mill. Coal under cutters, about a hundred mine cars of all shapes and sizes, breaker parts, Sheave wheels, mine rail, and all sorts of other mine related stuff! Here's some pics of when we were in there during the scrapping process. We were supposed to get an entire stack of mine cars, but after we hauled 2 out they thought we didn't want any more and cut the rest up! We could only haul 2 at a time! Oh well........

Yea it was better than a museum in there. Now all gone. Not much equipment lying around the woods anymore around the Carbondale, Scranton, Wilkes Barre area.

Chris, that strikes me as similar to "The Lost Engines of Roanoke." Only, the engines were saved.

Man, I would have give just about anything to get in that place with my truck and tools. I often pine for the days when scrap wasn't worth so much that it warranted the death of every piece of old machinery and fence row artifact that you could drive a truck to.

What would the cost of supplies be for a cosmetic resto on this engine?

Couple buckets of paint, some sandblasting, some wire brushes. Maybe around $400-$500

If someone does a detailed write up on materials and a labor schedule, I think LHVA would probably fund it.
