Here is the historic image of the mystery side rod mine locomotive. This was sent to me via email from Chris in New Zealand. Thanks Chris

thanks Pete and NZ Chris.

well, that's not the exact same locomotive, but its close enough.

so what's the verdict? a vertical slot in the siderod? it's tough to tell from that photo.

theres a perfect picture in the museum there.... can someone go take a picture of it or scan it so we can put an end to this?

I'll vote for a slotted side rod.

i have to agree. Definatly a vertical slot. That would be awsome to see operate.

John,

I'm new here, but I was looking at the photos in this topic and came across your photos of an electric dump car. I was wondering if you knew the builder? Reason I ask is I have builder's drawings for a 1930s experimental Buda-gasoline powered dump car by Difco, of which only one was made that I'm aware of (for a quarry in central Ohio). My drawings don't show a full elevation of the car so I'm curious to know what it actually looked like. I'll have to check the drawings again but I think it was a G/E, in which case it could have looked a lot like the one you posted.

Hey Mike,

Those are Difco built.

Very common for the waste coal haulage. Difco built alot of the them for that purpose. There are more cars that go with the unit that is pictured. Thre are two more cars but all share the same power but the two not pictured are cabless.

Anyone know if the only remaining lokie at the Wanamie mine is preserved or headed for preservation? It looks to be in good condition, or is it too far gone to consider?

Are underground mine railroads mainly link-and-pin coupling or something else? I can't really tell in any of hte pictures. Also, if anyone could find a picture of a fireless cooker mine lokie, it would be appreciated.

they used to be until the alphabet people made them use couplers that could be done from along side the car. sort of like minature rr couplers.

Trawling back over this....The DPL site has had for some time an enlargement facility that allows indepth viewing of the subject,
A close up revealed a bit more about the slotted drive rod more exactly than I could have imagined.

Pages back, there was talk about "permissible" and "non permissible" locos. What does that mean?

Permissible means for use in gaseous mines. There are things that have to be sealed up so sparks can't come in contact with flammable gases. It's like a Koehler lamp is a permissible flame lamp.
