ha, just a little test to see who's paying attention. nice job Erik.

they definitely look like a set of tandem locomotives with the handrail and the tongues on each end that link the two units together.... but they're the trucks from a locomotive similar to this one:

actually, I wonder if anyone has ever made a little electric locomotive out of the truck/traction motors from a full size locomotive. anyone ever heard of it being done?

John, The answer is yes. Conrail built three battery-powered locomotive shop shifters using EMD trucks. Here is some more info. on them: It was one of three such battery-operated animals constructed for CONRAIL to be used as [level ground] shop shifters. The "BUG" is owned by the Beaver Lawrence Railway Historical Society [former Beaver Valley Junction Chapter NRHS]. Steve Raith of the society tells us that the 'BUG' was originally from Selkirk Yard in New York and was transfered to Conway Yard in the late 1990's. It saw little action in Conway because Conway has a roundhouse. Roundhouse tracks have a very slight grade away from the turntable pit to keep locomotives from rolling into the pit. The little unit was not able to overcome the weight of newer units and the grade, which would on occasion cause it spin its wheels. Selkirk and Collinwood are both flat 'run-through' shops where these 'Bugs' were more effective. One is reportedly still in use by CSX at Collinwood Yard in Cleveland... in a dry indoor environment where it can get enough traction to pull a diesel unit a short distance. Located in the Mahoningtown area of New Castle, just off Rt 18, Interchange Specialty Services--Car repairs and rebuilds railcars for owners. Steve Timko photographed the ISSR 'BUG.'

Another 'BUG' from RailPictures.Net. FL9 2017 sits coupled to Metro-North's ex New York Central battery powered "switcher". The switcher isn't used anymore. Photo by: Brent van Dorp

wow, they really looked like tandem locomotives, even have old numbers on them and what appears to be a step into an operators position, however this provided a neater explanation and some very interesting photos!

You should see them with a crab reel on them. One of the few built that the reel is mounted veritically instead of horizontal like a pancake. It is positioned next to the motorman instead of on top of the mine locomotive. These are cool units. Absolutely no room to sit in this one.

In the picture coming our of the portal.

That is a nice string of buggies. But I thinking that each buggy would be 5 or 10 tons. Then taking in to account grade and wet rails. Those motors must be super heavy or I would think there would serious slippage.

Those small mine cars would be lucky to have had 1-1/2 to 2 tons max in them. The locomotive is a gathering unit & would typically push or pull the cars to the main haulage line & then a bigger mine locomotive would pull them up that grade pictured. The Goodman in the picture only weighs about 5 tons.

yep we load those buggies with a little more than one an a half tons each. now when i'm running a loaded trip out of the mine i usually open the goodman up about 500-600 ft before the opening and by the time i get there it usually has enough momentum to get up that rise no problem. sometimes i'll lay a little sand down if the rail looks wet but it usually doesn't need it because i get it going so fast.
