What is the main differences between these two lamps? How are they similar? I have a 1940s Koehler. Was there any great advances in the design since they first were manufactured?

The big difference is the screen on the davy isn't surronded by a chimney like the koehlers are. The chimney is about the only major improvement ever on a safety lamp. It helps the flame stay lit when your in a heavy air current or even just walking along a gangway.

the koehler also has a glass globe so the lamp give off significantly more light than the davey lamp. this was much nicer to work with as this would be your sole illumination in gassy workings!
