We in the heavy haul this is what you never want to happen. Luckily no one was hurt. We maintain a perfect safety record but an equipment failure such as this is difficult to predict. Machinery Transport out of Texas was transporting the locomotive from Timken in Canton, Ohio to Alabama when all of the sudden the trailer broke free from the semi pulling it.

In business since 1962 the only thing that might have caused this was a broken weld or a pin failure on the detach mechanism.

Yeah, I wondered about that story too.
Could it be that the driver of the truck didn't make sure the trailer was hooked on that king pin correctly?
I've seen it happen.
But if that were the case, the trailer would've probably come down with a big boom
as soon as it left the dock.
I saw my warehouse supervisor do that when he had his CDL permit.
Man, did I laugh at him...
I was even spiteful enough to wish that trailer was loaded with tile.
Then he really would've been in a world of you-know-what.

CHANGED THE ABOVE LINK.

The original liknk switched stories on me.

The king pin did not cause this. This was probably a thirteen axle set up. There would be a two axle jeep attached to the semi in which the removeable gooseneck would have been attached to as well. The gooseneck locks into two huge lifting pins but there is also a locking pin which keeps all of this together. Basically the entire front of the trailer became detached from the double drop trailer with the locomotive on it.. Very bad

Should be a General Electric center cab less the truck assemblies. Either the 65 0r 80 ton model. Notice how the locomotive broke all the chains. . . you now that had to hit real hard.

They estimate that the freeway will be closed 60-90days.

Wow, that is ashame. Too bad for the locomotive as it probably was going to be restored.. and also too bad about all the damage caused by this.. I'm glad noone was hurt because things could have been much worse.

I am guessing it was a locomotive purhased by Birmingham Rail (A locomotive dealer) for resale.

Here's a pic of the unit:

The unit is a GE 80-Ton, blt new for Timken in 1953.

NICE 8)

Ray I was hoping you were going to post a picture. The only thing I could find were links.

Was it true that it was going to Birmingham Rail :?:

Thanks,
Pete

Wow, $50,000,000 worth of damage? That seems pretty extreme, that kind of prices tag almost implies that the bridge needs to be rebuilt.. The original estimates I read estimated $500,000 worth of damage and that they were going to bill the trucking company for it.

Hope they have good insurance... Some of these are small companies, that's not something that a small company could afford.

The bad thing is that now this will probably effect our insurance companies as well.

Ah I see, an oversized deal.
Holy nuts, that is bad...
Don't think there's anything that could've been detected with that.
