What are the things that sometimes you see in old pictures next to the tracks with a vertical post going up a few feet taller that the actual train would be, then a horizontal post connected to it that extends out over the tracks with chains or straps cut to a specific length spaced a few inches apart hanging from the bottom of it? (the chains would be dangling just over the cars as they pass under)

Understand what I mean? I couldn't seem to find a picture ...

what is it?

A PITA, AFA truck drivers are concerned. :)

I have no idea, I'm sorry to say. I mean, though.

They are called tell tales. (low height clearance warning device.)

They warn anyone that is ontop of a moving rail car that there is a tunnel or low clearance ahead. They were used in decades past but becoming more difficult to find.

I can understand the clearance warning for slow moving tall cars on the track, they do thinks like that in front of parking garages.. But it would really need to be for a low speed warning.

A steel chain free hanging with a person on top of a train going 40 MPH, that person really has no chance if they hit it..

The idea was that if a Brakeman was on top of the train facing the opposite direction especially he would get hit by the hang danglers and know to get down. There are a couple around Ashley yet.

You think we have old timey stuff here were I'm at now just wait to you see what we have were I plan on relocating too, or that general area anyway! There was one on Main Street in Ashley untill a year ago, that's laying in the ditch now. There was another on Hazel St. And I think theres two off of Blackman St. in Wilkes-Barre.
