Well, last Tuesday..

We had a fire ring fail on the tug Cornell I work on. On the Cleveland 278A there is a copper fire ring on top of the cylinder, outside of which is the head gasket. The fire ring failed causing the O rings on the water jumpers between the liner and head to melt, which caused exhaust gas to get into the water side (causing the expansion tank to let off a few times before we got to it). We had the parts overnighted from Hatch & Kirk in Seattle WA....well, we tried..After spending the better part of a day trying to find a supplier.we ordered the kit for rush overnight...guy forgot to place the order at H&K. After a few phone calls over Chinese dinner finding out where they are we got them the next day. We also redid the liner O rings as well while it was apart.
Anyway..

Draining the engine down.

Image
Covers & fuel lines (and overspeed) off.

Image
Exhaust jumper and rockers off. Note the hole on top of the exhaust. The jumpers are all water cooled. You can lay your hand on them while shes running.

Image
Parts & Tools.

Image
Pulling the head. 4x 1 11/16" nuts, 650ft lbs each. Not fun finding that socket on the fly. We wound up using a torque multiplier, pretty much a 4:1 planetary drive. More on that later.

Image
Heads off, fire ring in Matt's hand.

Image
Old head gasket, upper jumper gasket and an O ring from the head.

Image
The head.

Image
Main bearings off.

Image
New gasket kits.

Image
Our patented liner-pulling thing.

Image
The failed rings caused carbon to build up around the liner...time for heat. We maxed out a 1klb air winch. They outta make glue from that shit.

Image
Up she comes.

Image
Liners out.

Image
In the airbox..and crank case.

Image
The O rings were permatexed in so they would not roll when installing.

Image
In she goes.

Image
New gasket and rings.

Image
Putting the head back on.

Image
Injector and fuel rod.

Image
Going back together. You need to take the cover off the #5 cylinder to get clearance to the jumper bolts.

Image
Old ring and multiplier.

Image
Time to rebolt the connecting rod caps on.

Image
Done..

Anyone have any tips on how to degrease a camera?

Always fun stuff. I will dig up some cool carbon build up pictures in a 567 power assembly. Makes your engine look like a silver platter since you work your diesel engine. Thanks for posting the pictures I totally know what you got into on that job. 8)

Cleveland 278A, the cousin to the 567. Derived from the Winton 248.

Power assembly removal by Mike Schreiber & Rick on an EMD switcher.

Image
Oh yeah this is what happens when these things sit and idle all day for weeks on end. Good carbon build up in the exhaust ports

Image
What it should look like

Image
A good comparison

Image
What the carbon build up looks like inside the block.

Image
Rick attempting to clean some of the carbon from the engine block. One of the worst ones we have seen in a while.

This is the type of roller bearing conversions we do in our shop

I give you guys credit. Thats a hard job even in a shop under the best conditions !! I used to work for a (gulp) trucking company way back. They used to do all the delivery/pick up for Precesion National plating. Used to recon crankshafts, cams, liners, pistons etc. for the railroads. Formerly located in near by Clark Summit. It never ceased to amaze me how large everything was. ( crankshafts, liners, even the camshafts for the air compressors.) I got to see alot of non public places inside the shops. UP in Little Rock, Conrail in Altonna ( pre merger) Burlington Northern in Burlington Iowa ( again pre merger) NS In Roanoke VA., VMV in Paducha Ky. Unfortunately no pics. It was per digital. Think the EMD 20 cylinders were the largest I ever saw. Everything about those 20 cylinders was large >> great pics !!
