How easy/difficult would it be to convert a house with oil heat to coal heat?
Any volunteers?

It's easy enough if you do it yourself especialy if it's a hot water system, steam could be a little tricky just because everything is usualy rusted together and hot air isn't that bad either. And there are plenty of rebuilt/used ANTHRACITE stokers out there that will outlast any of us here that are about 1/3 the cost of a new one.

You have a point. I'm rough on equipment don't get me wrong but He takes it to a whole new level! So maybe it won't outlast him. But as far as being rough on stuff goes I never owned a brockway but when, not if, I own one we will see whose rougher

As the others said it wouldnt be that difficult. And having two grandparents that heated with anthracite. It is your best heat. No highs and lows like other forms of hot air. and steam isnt that difficult either. Most fittings are cast. We used to just give the rusted ones a whack with a 10 lb hammer and they would crack. Without damaging treads. BUT the pipes had to be tipping ever so slightly back to the boiler. If not the condensation would collect, and the steam wouldnt be able to overcome the restriction ( amazing ) We worked on a house once. The lady said the one rediator went cold. Couldnt figure it out. Turned out the house settled ( as all do in the anthracite region) and tipped the pipes away from the boiler. We put some shims under the radiator, raising the pipes along with it. And it worked again !!! And besides all of the benefits.... Its an american product !!!! I used to tell people on the tour that NEPA is the Saudi Arabia of the anthracite industry !!!

I looked into it a while ago and it doesn't make sense here in NY. Hard to find coal at a reasonable price because no one uses it here. But you might want to look into a unit that does both coal and oil.

It'll give you (sorry, yoons) cost flexibility when the markets change, and you'll have heat when you let the fire go out. You won't have to worry about it when you're on the road and have to spend an extra night somewhere due to weather or something. If you're doing long haul now, I don't know.

Might even burn them chicken bones John was talkin' bout, heyna?
