Today was the first outing for the new mine research vehicle, a Land Rover Defender 110 turbo diesel, we did a little bit of trail riding and a paid a visit to the Roxbury mine. So far I've added a roof rack, recovery gear, high lift jack, first aid kit, power inverter, tool kit and optima battery.

Nice vehicle!

Hate to burst your bubble on the Optima battery but there not good for diesels. You can't go by cranking amps but amp-hours. Optima red tops (the most common) are 50AH, diesels like 75AH or better. Your engine needs only 300CA but it needs it for a longer time plus the glow plugs (or heating grid, not sure what your engine uses) use a lot of current.

If you go to their website, click on "Product Support" then FAQ and then each of the three types (blue, red, yellow). Highest for red is 50, yellow 55 and blue does go as high as 75.

I work and own diesels, been down this road. :)

Mike that is one bad ass MRV (mine research vehicle)! Love the snorkle! I look forward to riding shotgun on future missions!

I put a yellow top in it thinking that would be sufficient as it is just a 2.5 liter engine, would a small diesel like this get by on less amp hours? only 4 glow plugs. Exrtreme reliability is top priority, so overkill on the battery is crucial. I'll post updates as the project comes along, should be an interesting process as the truck will be a purpose built mine research vehicle.
Miner Mike how about riding shotgun next weekend up to the cobalt mine to check out the river adit.

Mike, I'm going to a wedding that Saturday but the following Saturday is free. Are you free then?

Now that's the battery you should have, especially if you are getting a winch in the future. As far as engine size, displacement isn't the issue. Number of cylinder is it. I6 or V8 diesel and the factory uses two batteries. Your four cylinders are still hard to turn whether it's 1.9L like my VW or your 2.5L. The high compression radio still makes cylinder pressure in the 500 psi range. FYI, VW's come with a 80AH battery from the factory![/url]

Not to get off the Defender, but I almost bought a Jetta TDI just the other week for long range missions.... can't beat the fuel milage! I figured that would be what i'd take to AK this summer..

You should have!! They are a blast. Upgrade the ECM chip and injectors, a little intake and exhaust work and you'll get 50 more hp over the factory 90 (or 110, depends on the engine) and it's a clutch-burning freak show. :)

Nice new MRV... But something is wrong, the steering wheel is still on the wrong side...;-)

As for Optima Batteries, for offroad, MRVing, winching, etc. you really are best off with the Yellow Top. Yes you lose a little winter cranking amps, but if the battery is charged, it will put out plenty of crank amps.

The Red Top batteries are not really good for anything but starting engines.

I'm a little disappointed in the in the Optima batteries as I have had some bad luck with life on one of them and the lack of warranty on yellow tops, but I guess that is a different story.
