The steam train trip from Tunkhannock to Jim Thorpe is May 15th (Sat) this year in conjunction with Jim Thorpe's birthday celebration in town. It's reservation only, no day-of ticket sales. I am ordering my tickets right now.

You can download the order form on Wyoming County United Way's web site. The trip is $69 a person. They run Reading's 425 Baldwin. Never got to go, but it looks like I can this year so I'm pumped.

Post up if you're going, we can meet up.

yea that was almost too exciting haha. they pushed the go lever a bit further forward at the falls bridge but it seriously took 45 minutes to get there!

Haha Chris. LOL But it couldnt be any worse than the Carbondale trip ??? Remember that one ? Round trip turned into a one way trip after being " rescued". What was that one ? 2 hrs for 25 miles if I remember. But that route ( old D&H Penn division) would make a good moderated excursion featuring the old collieries that were along that route.

What happened, the train couldn't get traction for some reason or the train broke down?

I guess while going slow sucks, sometimes it is a great way to see areas you've always wanted to see on rail. Without passenger service in that area, these trains are the only things that allow you to see the areas. A little pricey, but I'd love to take a ride on this sometime soon.

The trip to Carbondale was a great trip. Ive been all over our area by rail, but the one line that got me hooked on railroads, ( Penn Division) I havent ridden till that trip. My grandfathers back yard boardered on the rail line. This is going back in the mid 70's. I spent every weekend up there for over four years till he got ill. In that time I remember trains well over 100 cars long ( on a grade like that, it was alot) six to eight unit consists blasting through grade crossings at 40 MPH +. And everything from Erie Lackawanna SD 45's to D&H Alco 628's, the Lehigh Valley's " snow birds" C628's and even the D&H bicentenial unit stopping at every little town and having tours of the cab. So it was a nice trip to actually see it from the train, after seeing it only from the ground. BUT the trip we went on was a "mystery trip" complete with actors, who were...being nice... a bit of an interruption of the trip. Let me put it this way. Our one and only Chris gave up the invite & oppurtunity to get on the trains PA systen to give a moderation to the passengers on the various colliery sites we passed on the way back !!! LOL !!! :P

There is also going to be a Scranton-to-Jim Thorpe steam trip in conjunction with the National Railway Historical Society convention in June.
