I stopped by the railroad yesterday afternoon on the way home from Rough and Tumble. It was the first day of operations for 2010. They had two steam locomotives running! One pulled a passenger train and another a mixed (freight and passenger) train. I think Rob Davis and some others from the forum were on the mixed train, but their train departed before I could find them. The ride was nice. I sat next to a coal burning stove and warmed up while observing the Amish fields and snow banks that towered almost as tall as the windows.

I'd bet that there is a screen over the stack and the flare allows for enough open area.

Kind of small for a spark arrestor, but I'd say that's the function.

Thank you both for the compliments! The locomotive normally doesn't have the funnel, but wore it yesterday because they were pretending that engine 475 (its real number) was a backdated version of engine 382, which is long gone. I'm guessing the funnel was used back in the day because of something to do with the bituminous coal they were burning. Maybe it was spark prone as Doug suggests. They referred to this particular funnel as a "sunflower" stack. Some coal burning engines, such as the shays at Cass, still have big "diamond" shaped funnels that serve as spark arrestors.

Here's some info about the funnel and other modifications to the locomotive:
