I was at the Navy Museum and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC recently and noticed that there was a wide variety of hoists featured on the model ships displayed at those museums. Although maritime in nature, it was not unusual for surplus hoists to be sold to coal mines after the ships were retired. The full album of hoist models are online here:
