Friday, March 23, 2:27 p.m.

Troopers are looking for the person who broke into two buildings at a former mine site in Schuylkill County.

State police said the break-in happened sometime Wednesday night at the R and D Coal Company. The thief got away with equipment and copper from the site.

A worker at the mine was killed in an explosion at the site near Tremont in October of 2006. It was later shut down.

I forget what it is a pound right now but it is good for a quick buck and any scrap yard will take it.

yeah i don't like it either. If you think about the time you put into getting the stuff and taking it to a scrapper you could have probably made just as much money with that time in overtime at work. idk

Yeah, I have heard about accidents from people getting killed in mines getting lost trying to steal stuff for it's scrap value. It really isn't work it as the scrap value of metals is soo low. You really need a LOT of it in order for it to not be a waste of your time. As far a mines go, just leave the stuff there. It kills the historic value to take the stuff to make $5.

Stealing metal for scrap is one of the reasons a number of Highlands mines no longer have ore cars, trackage inside, headframes standing. The miners didn't take EVERYTHING out when they abandoned a mine. People did, especially during WWII when there was a nice return for scrap metal.

Ya but in this case cooper is worth some money and someone that is on drugs or desperate for money wether it is for 5 bucks or so they do it. It sucks and they need to be stopped.

this isnt an old abandoned mine, its the one that recently a miner got killed in. they took the scrap from a trailer they stored stuff in. knowing that and the area its in im really surprised no one got a bullet over this one.
