Howdy y'all I realized I hadn't introduced myself before diving into asking questions. I started collecting mining stuff when i was about 9 when my grandpaw gave me his lunch pail. He and one of his brothers worked for Cain coal co. up in Big Soddy Gulf. Paw paw drove a coal truck because he was claustrophobic and uncle Bill, his brother, was killed in a cave in. My area was a big iron mining area from the mid 1800's through the 1930's. When the mines at Estelle shut down the people were so poor that when they left they took the town with them. Theres nothing left but a cemetery. The iron ore was being mined at pigeon mountain and coal at lookout mountain by the Durham coal and iron company. My area by the way is northwest Georgia. I have coal and iron mines all around me and about an hour and a half to Dahlonaga and gold country. Most of my actual mining experience has been recreational placer mining. But have spent years exploring the iron mines around here. If ya'll want to know anything else just ask.

Have you ever ventured up into Southern Tennessee? The area just northwest of Chattanooga?

Yes. I am only about ten miles south of Chattanooga. the area you are talking about is where big soddy gulf is located.

Neat, I go down there for a mission trip every year, have poked around some of the mining remains near Dunlap, Tracy City, Jasper and South Pitt. Beautiful area

Hi there, I’m new to this site and I wanted to ask a question.
I would like to make an announcement about a new web site I’m managing but I don’t want to break any of the rules on this forum. Would somebody please advise me if A) it’s acceptable to make such an announcement and B) which forum I should use?

Many thanks,
Christine

Christine,

1) You could PM Miner Greg, he and Miner Mike have the final say. I would suggest you include a link.

2) You could start a new thread and if one of the moderators don't like it we have a delete button.

I would say if it is Mine related you are most likely OK. Blatant spam gets delete quickly.

i will add, there are few rules, and the ones that we do have can be broken frequently. spam is accepted but only by johnr......

so if you are either johnr, or working inside these few rules that can be broken, post away.........
