Hey train, i think the guys you need to hook up for that trip would probably be cavers/urban explorers. Though its a tunnel, it doesnt peak my interests since the subject isnt rooted in mining.. :)

Train, I am curious, was this river diverted by a man made water underground or is this some sort of cave? Unfortunately Dan is right. We aren't interested in mines for the sake of going underground -- although it is an excellent way to cool off in the summer. We are enthusiastic about industrial history, archeology and geology amongst many other things. Sometimes a manmade tunnel (the Oxford RR Tunnel) will pique our interest but we'd prefer a lengthy mine tunnel any day. Now if this waterway accessed underground workings, that's a different story!

I'm sure there's been previous explorers.... how often are people kayaking through it?

The Saj was put underground in the 1930s as part of a WPA project to close what has become a open sewer... Now in 2006 depsite fresh water coming in it still is a bit of sewer so...How could someone survive 5 miles of Methane and Hydrogen Sufide? Current is strong at 2-3 miles per hour so one would need that amont of air.. Other sewers might feed into it. I did talk tothe sewr commisioner and he knows almost nothing about its layout so we would be doing a public serivice to figure whats down there. It starts outside in Cheektawoga and ends above ground in a Lake in Deleware Park...
Perhaps it would be better if I go one of your trips first....

Fresh water flows in and it flows into a fresh water lake... The water is dirty but not that dirty because it is not treated when it comes out

The other thing you really have to worry about is cavins. Is this a concrete pipe you are looking into or a rock tunnel? If this is a rock tunnel, I would be a bit concerned. While the water is freely going down the tunnel, you don't know for sure the shape of it under the earth. If there are any cavins, a caving will create a dam inside of the tunnel. Being that there is water flowing down into the tunnel there is a current. If the current is strong enough that you can't row against it, and there is a dam inside of the tunnel, the water level could go up to the roof of the tunnel. That really would not be a good situation to get into if you can't row out of the tunnel. I am surprised the sewer commissioner would advise anyone to enter the tunnel given the unknown condition of the tunnel.

It is a concreat tunnle that was supposed to be used only as way to put a creek under ground during the days when Charia nd misquitoes were spreading deieases. There is plenty of head room and yes there is a current..
I gave teh artical on its contruction but no maps. Someplece some were there has to be a blue print
