Hello, i recently acquired a mine car from the Lehman 179 slop courtesy of Chris. I am going to restore it and probably put it on display in my front yard maby put some coal in it.

Picture from chris, how it was found, this is about all i have to go on, im trying to make it as original as i can.

I have all the wood cut for the sides i am waiting on square head bolts from a friend for origional look. The steel will all be painted black also, i didnt paint it yet because some parts still need to be heated and bent...

we just gave this car to him last week and look at it  when mike completes this one i think he needs to come work with us! looks great so far mike! ohio boys, this is 36" perfect to run at the ugm facility when he is done, thats if we can pry it out of his yard for a few days  he does need wheels though. this is what i was asking you about the 8" wheels with a 1-1/2 axle for. if you guys can help mike out at all with that it would be great! we still have 2 more of these cars, we'll see if he does a good job with this one maybe we'll contract out the others to him

If that is 36" ga it looks more like a Bituminous car vs. an ANTY style car so it would look better running over here.

We will check our inventory of wheels but I don't think we have something that small.

here we go again. before this gets sidetracked.......... again........ however yes, it is a strange little car for the anthracite region. its not very big, and the strange thing is 179 was a pretty decent operation. pretty much a sister mine to the slope 190 tour. there is 4 standard size anthracite "box" style cars in there and a car that looks similar to this but larger in the mine. we have one of those also that was on the surface. it appears they flattened the sides that bow out and used it as a prop car. however i was wondering if maybe after the mine closed if someone was either going in bootlegging with these cars, as there was 3 or in independent operator started it up for a short while with only maybe himself and another........ who knows. at any rate........ its staying here!

hmmm, why such of a small car for a big operation. I wasn't sure exactly how big to make it, but i did end up cutting the boards to 6 ft length seems good. Chris what kind of paint did you use on the other cars you painted?

yea thats what i was wondering. maybe they were bootlegging. probably never find out. anyways, we use rustoleum primer and flat black on all our mine cars and equipment. the motor is gloss black though. wood looks good so far.

measure how long the bolts need to be from under the head, to the end of the threads and what diameter. ill see what i can do. i can probably come up with that for you before the wheels.

Nice!
I wish I would've taken a woodworking shop in high school instead of that pesky home-ec.

shana, nice

mike, make sure you turn the dump door brackets around when you make the door. the steel should be on the outside of the car and the bent round part and bar across the top of the wood.

looks great so far. gotta get that baby some real wheels, then we can run it at our place when you want. should be easy to throw in the back of a pickup!
