so tomorrow is mine car monday. we are planning on getting the roller bearings and housings soaking in kero so we can clean them up a taste. also we plan on painting all the steel parts that we have flat black. we still need to get the bumpers from the scrap yard and also need to fabricate the steel supports for the car sides as well as dump door parts. should be no problem though. also going to do some fabricating on the spacers we need to bush the axles out to 3" we will see how progress goes. first night working on the ugm coal car, hope its not just a bs session......

well work has officially started on the ugm coal car, we had a good work session tonight. got a coat of paint on all of the steel parts we have. still have to pick up the bumpers and brackets for the cross beams. mike a. worked on cleaning all of the old dried up grease out of all 4 roller bearings, and then we got them soaking in jet fuel (kerosene) to totally free them up. adam and i torched out all the cut off bolts from the roller bearing cap brackets. i basically heated them up and adam pounded them out with the hammer. banks was cleaning the wheels up then adam and banks started to paint. it all came out pretty good. these axles are not going down without a fight either. there was end play spacers installed on the axles but since we are using different wheels than intended for these axles we figured we better trial fit them. well its a good thing we did as it gave us a 37" gauge. that may squeak a bit on our 36" line! so we had to hammer the end play spacers off the axles and install thinner ones. we have ones that will work there at the shop but i have better ones at my dads house so ill stop by and get ones that will fit perfectly. anyways with the right ones it gives us a nice 35 1/2 inch gauge. which is what we want. these wheels have a 4 inch tread made for slight differences in mine gauge, they werent perfect! we also measured the sleeves we need to make for the axles and got a pretty good idea of what we are going to need for wood and steel to finnish this car. this one is going to be fun!

nice, yea its gonna be a good one. however we hit the first snag tonight. the sleeves we got dont exactly fit as we hoped. one slid on one side of one axle nice, the other side doesnt fit at all and the other axle is a bit larger diameter and wont work at all. so back to stage one. got a few options but it looks like fabricating new axles may be in order. either that or take the original 30" gauge ones, cut them, add a section of schedule 80 pipe then weld them back up at 36", checking on prices tomorrow for making new ones.

ok ladies and gents, solved the axle problem. today called up our steel supplier and ordered 2 new 3 inch solid stock axles. picking them up tomorrow. then have to weld on the wheel stops and a tube between them. so we will be fabricating new axles for just about $100 per axle. not too bad! gonna skip mine car monday next week while i finnish them up here at work. then, we will be ready to assemble the undercarrage and order the wood up. problem solved, i was quite frustrated last night about it!

hot rolled cause it was the most inexpensive. we are going to face it where the bearings sit so it has a nice mating surface.

Hey Chris if you want to get a better result on the bearing surface use a burnishing tool on the lathe for the final finish. We use them on all our new & rebuilt axles.
