 Woah... there were a few photos in there that i hadn't seen yet! The "team" in the mine lit up brighter than MSHA. ....that's kindof hard to do  That one photo looking out the RR tunnel is killer!

The timbers in broken boot... are they really new or are they slow to decompose in the climate? I noticed in one of the pics theres what appears to be an old one that looks like it came out of a coal mine.. But other than that everything is pristine!

Finally! Yes, those are some very nice shots! You can just tell by the size of the air / water lines looking at HomeStake Mine, that this is a huge operating. I guess you didn't really make it below the first level? Did they do any mining on the first level, or was that mostly for haulage and so forth? While the skips and man trip cars were not operating, I assume there are ladders and stairs available to go down the shaft to lower levels? Any updates on what is happening there as I remember you saying something about using a lower level as a science center..

greg, yes we were only on the first level. when we left they were in talks with some national science committee on building a research facility on the 5000 foot level. it has been allowed to fill up with water to there and now they are running the pumps again. im not sure about steps going down a shaft as that would be alot of steps! however the elevator cages in the shaft and the hoist are perfectly operable and they use it on occasion to go down for monthly inspections...... too bad we werent there then! i have a picture somewhere from the hoist, its massive. ill have to dig that up. i didnt take it, i bought it there.

Are there any stopes or mine workings off of the first level? If not, how far down would you have to go to reach say another landing? I would like to know the status of the project too. Would be nice to get the opportunity to go back there and document some of it.
