I think thats a pumping shaft thats still owned by reading. Were there a couple little AMD creeks around it?

It seems like i recognize the building.. would make sense if it was close to the new st. nick. it looks like one of readings pumping shafts.

this is the pumping hole/borehole for the oakhill tunnel. the oak hill tunnel drains the pine knot and above workings, this borehole drains the oak hill workings as the mine pool there is about 25 feet lower.

ok i posted that last one at work and didnt have alot of time. ill get more into it now. the oak hill no.1 tunnel was originally a haulage tunnel for the philadelphia and reading coal and iron company (later reading anthracite company) in 1944 i believe, a 3500 foot rock tunnel was driven to connect to a haulage tunnel in the pine knot workings at the second level just off the pine knot no.2 shaft. this would now be the water level drain tunnel for the pine knot and thomaston collieries. they would pump water to this level and it would flow out the oak hill tunnel. after the mines closed, the mine pool found its natural water level and the mine pool from thomaston colliery and pine knot flowed out this tunnel. the oak hill mine pool comes out that borehole at that pumping station and is about 20-30 feet below the actual oak hill tunnel. there is a large ditch in the oak hill tunnel that the water flows through and a barrier at each gangway to keep the water from flowing down the pitch into the oak hill mine pool. after the water discharges out of the tunnel opening, it flows through a long underground pipe and exits near that pumping station. i did some research on this mine and the mine pool there when i was doing some work for reading anthracite. there is another member of this forum that goes by the name "cropfall" who is very knowledgeable in this area.

Where are the mine entrances located?

Chris,

How far does that bore hole go down? While now it is serving as a means for keeping the Oak Hill mine pool lower than the Oak Hill tunnel, was this a former pumping station for dewatering the Oak Hill Mine workings? How deep did it go?

you know thats a good question, i would say yes as there is a pumping station over the borehole. its in disuse now, but i bet that borehole goes down a ways, i can make a call after the holidays and find out, now im curious.

From my understanding, the Oak Hill Drift is kept as a working operation because of the drainage running through it. With that it is inspected.

That same Drift on 7/08/06.

yes you are correct, it is considered a working operation because it drains 3 mine pools for readings stripping operations. it is inspected twice a year.

Chris,

Was Oak Hill tunnel double tracked? It sure looks like it from the picture. It looks as if one track was left in place, and the other removed for drainage.

If it was haulage tunnel, doubletracking might make sense.

Have you come across a lot of doubletrack underground?

Rob
