when was it torn down? I was there earlier this year and there were a couple big red buildings left plus some offices. I know it wasn't complete when I was there, but did everything get torn down now?

just the breaker was torn down, i believe they finnished it late last year. the red buildings that remain are coal pockets and a bagging plant to sell bagged coal. i believe there is a washery there too. however once the got the gilberton breaker this one was slated for demolition. they still plan on keeping the other buildings though as they still use them.

cool, thanks for posting those! I still wish I would have seen the breaker in person, but at least I got to see what it looked like.

is it me or does it look like the breaker is smaller than the Old St Nick? I would think it would be bigger.

oh yea its much smaller! its really not that big at all as the supply and demand of anthracite is not as large as when the old st nick was in operation. plus it was more efficient.

I heard that the Reading Anthracite breaker outside Girardville is at capacity & they will be processing the overflow at the New St. Nick Site.

Anyone else hear anything?

I’m guessing Reading Anthracite would build something similar to the Girard Breaker. It could be why they prevented Reading & Northern from abandoning the Minersville running track. Logistically, it would make more sense to take the coal from the Pottsville area for processing somewhere closer, with rail access, other than Girardville.

For the past few months, Reading & Northern has been running almost daily coal extras to the Girard Breaker.
