It certainly is a water car, but the water is a little colored and doesn't smell too good!

They have one of those at Sterling Hill in the museum area. I wonder how common place these are especially in the other areas of mining. In the deep hard rock mines, if you are deep enough, waiting for a man cage to get you isn't really an option. How common or uncommon are these in Anthracite mining or any other areas of mining?

um, in anthracite mines, you just go into a monkey, or cross cut and take care of business. no waiting for special mine cars to show up

Maybe a lot of it has to do with the layouts of the mines. Being that hard rock mines are in near vertical veins when coal mines are more horizontal (except in the pitch mines), you might have less physical space to go without offending someone. However in the pitch mines, I can see this a potential problem again.

They used to call them honey pots. They are shown and discussed in the book DRILLS AND MILLS

On my old crew you just held it until we put in our round. 1 was okay in a down moment but there was no time for no. 2.

They began to be used in the early 1900's because people were just becoming aware that many of the illnesses that miners contracted (besides scilicosis) were communicable diseases that could be prevented with basic improvments in sanitaion practices. Many miners contracted internal parasites, bacterial and viral infections from areas that the miners used for toilets. After the honey pots came into use, hookworm infections in particular, all but disappeared.
