Creek Flowing into Sinkhole in Mahanoy City

Mahanoy Creek is now flowing into a sinkhole after the recent heavy rains.

By Bob Reynolds

A danger has developed in Mahanoy City and officials are scrambling to do what they can to eliminate the threat. A creek has disappeared right into a big sinkhole and it is now becoming a dangerous attraction.

North Mahanoy creek in Mahanoy City is high because of recent rains but if you follow it, it disappears. A sinkhole has opened and is swallowing the creek. It's emptying into abandoned coal mines.

"Igeorge mannarella "It's scarey. Water can do a lot of damage," said George Manarella. He owns a garage about 100 yards downstream from the sinkhole. "It's a god send that it happened here and not behind my shop. It would probably tear the foundation out of my building."

What worries some people is that already youngsters have heard about the disappearing creek. Officials said one slip and they'd be dragged into the hole with no chance of rescue.

"It's a pretty dangerous situation. Something you want to think about is protecting the area from children coming in here," said Jack Stauffenberg of Mahanoy City.

Police promise more patrols and a temporary fence will be put up but correcting the problem could take months.

"It doesn't take much. Water is a pretty powerful thing. It doesn't take long to erode something away," said Dave Morgan of Barnesville.

More rain will make the scene more spectacular and that could attract more of the curious.

"It's bigger than what I thought it was going to be. I'm kind of surprised that it's done as much as it did already. I think they should think about correcting it quickly," Stauffenberg added.

Yes there are workings there, alot of them.
Mahanoy City was really heavily mined in the old days.
When my sister and I were there to see it this afternoon/evening, we ran into a young guy who had a DEP jacket on. Works at the Pottsville office, he told us he figured he'd come and have a look at it today, ahead of time, because he knows he is going to be working on it tomorrow.
On the mahanoytownship yahoo group, someone posted some pics of it, before they put up the orange fence.
Jim, the DEP guy took a pic with my camera for me, he walked down to it. We stayed up on the bank.

I wonder if the water is flowing into an isolated mine or slowly filling up workings. The potential of damage from this seems great -- especially if the pressure of the water is allowed to build up in confined areas without any discharge. One day the water could burst through the ground and/or from sealed openings like what happened recently in Carbondale. I suppose it wouldn't have any effect on the mine pool right? Isn't the level kept constant by a bore hole?

Here's the article from today's Pottsville Rebublican:

Mine slope opens, diverts Mahanoy Creek

03/11/2008
MAHANOY CITY — Crews within a month should begin filling a mine slope opening that is diverting water.

Mick Kuhns, chief of the anthracite branch of the Office of Surface Mining in Wilkes-Barre, said that although the water from the Mahanoy Creek is now flowing into a mine slope and beneath the ground under Mahanoy City, entering behind the former Kaier Brewery, it poses no threat to properties in the borough.

The hole opened in a wooded area off Bowman’s Road and only a few feet from the Mahanoy Area School District bus garage.

The opening was discovered March 3, Borough Manager Jerry Teter said.

On Saturday, mining officials installed an orange fence around the area to keep the curious away.

“We were down to look at it and right now we believe it’s mining related,â€
