Interesting story. I guess that's why they were hiring a few months ago...

Are any other mines in the area fully mechanized?

They said in the video at Kimmels, the coal seam is at an 18° pitch, while most coal seams are at a 45°-90° pitch.

My questions are:

Is there a limit on the pitch of the seam to utilize fully mechanized operations?

What is the pitch of Harmony Mine?

Where is the Harmony Mine located in Mt. Carmel?

Thanks!!

M.T.

yes kimmels is approaching it. its between 10 20 degrees. the problem is the machine is too long to go over the knuckles in the seam and i cant climb the pitch or it slides down it.

What is the pitch of Harmony Mine?

in most of the mine it is practically flat. however they are sinking a new slope where the vein pitches over. right now the slope is over 500 feet long but they are waiting for the pitch to increase before driving gangways off it to mine it with traditional chutes. its about 30 degrees.

Where is the Harmony Mine located in Mt. Carmel?

not sure on directions exactly i just know how to get there, know how that goes. pm banks.

try to keep this discussion about kimmels, this can be continued on the post on harmony. thanks

chris

Harmonys using joy miners, but kimmels ran into a problem with their Joy miner... It was too big! the vein of coal at kimmels is really low, and they had to downsize a little bit.

They're using a Fairchild CM:

Bituminous equipment has come to save the day for ANTHRACITE AGAIN :D Well I can tell you at least you will get a higher tonnage now.

Bituminous equipment rules the coal industry watch out Mike it is getting into your veins.

Well see if your rocket scientist enginners can figure out a way to mine a heavy pitch vein with out stripping it. Then and only then you might be able to convert me to using Soft Coal equipment in a Hard Coal mine. Soft Coal equipment can only really be used in a few localized areas the anthracite region. The rest can only be either stripped or mined using conventional anthracite mining techniques. Kimmels is doing allright now but had a hell of a time at first, mainly because the guy they imported from the soft coal didn't know how to mine anthracite. Now the guy that basically runs the show down there is a former independant operator and things are going allright So yes they may be using Soft Coal equipment and since it's been modified and run in a different manor than it was in the soft coal is it still soft coal equipment ? Longwall mining was practiced in the region 100 years ago, Belt Conveyors, Joy Loaders, and Joy Shuttle Cars were all used around here in the 40's and 50's so everything that appears unique to the soft coal may not be so.

Yeah Yeah Yeah. . .I will not start this battle again since almost everyone on this forum is from the Anty coal region. Mine A I will only let you compare once you actually come out to a REAL Bituminous mine.

Once soft coal equipment always soft coal equipment. There were no heavy modifications to proove other wise. You just keep your eye on this mine. It will be the highest tonnage per year mine due to our equipment.

I am pretty sure we are the only Bituminous coal guys on this forum,

I don't think kimmels will be the highest tonnage mine, second highest for sure though. The highest will be harmony which is using a joy miner. I think there is one or two other bitty guys on here. But I will say for soft coal types you guys ain't to bad  Eventually I would like to get out your way to see one of your mines but most likely it won't be in the near future.
