Nice pics, Chris. Were you the official photographer while everyone was working?
;)
I'll bet you missed your "spike girls."
So, does Piersa drive it in better than ME????

I smell a competition in the near future.
It's on, Piersa!

I should stop that. I'm getting too old to try and keep up with the kids anymore.

Those who attended the tour on Saturday might have overheard some of this, but for those who didn’t, here is an update on my track project. The big abandoned mill at the quarry was recently sold (again) and is now being dismantled so that its heavy timbers can be sent to a saw mill and turned into products such as flooring. Before the wood can be salvaged, the metal crane way suspended from it must be dismantled, including the lightweight, maybe 30 pound per yard railroad rail that the crane rode on. The new owner of the building was going to scrap the rail, so I purchased the rail and came up with four volunteers to move it today. We were able to get all but three pieces down. The only sticks remaining are under the crane and in the middle of the building. We were afraid that this third piece was holding the building together, so we left it in place. Fortunately, a spare rail was directly behind it, so we saved that. I think we got enough rail to lay at least 150 feet of track. Here are some photos of the work:

The rail supported a 5 ton Shepard Crane. If anyone is interested in the crane, please let me know. It has a span of about 27 feet. It would make a nice pedestrian bridge, mine railroad bridge, inspection pit, transfer table for live steamers, etc. The seller would like a little more than scrap value for it.

man that sucks... i remember walking through that building when we were there looking at all the ooolllldddd timber work and being very impressed. flooring, eh? i think it should go to people who appreciate where it came from. Not some new doctors house in a development right in the middle of an old colliery site.
