Springdale is still intact as of today. I wanted to take pics but I didn't have anywhere to park with the snow. Anyone have pics? What's inside the buildings, just a shaft filled up with water?

Also, visiting Pioneer Tunnel since I was in preschool, I was allways under the impression that the coal mines were tunnels in the side of the mountain and not shafts. Roughly, what percentage of the mines in Schuylkill County were shaft mines & tunnel mines?

My grandfather & his brothers operated a bootleg mine in the 1930's somewhere between Frackville & Mahanoy Plane. I wish he were still alive so I could hear some mining stories & share them with all of you.

hey mike. the average is about one shaft to two or three tunnels and slopes. pretty much every colliery had 2 shafts, but several tunnels or slopes. there were some smaller collieries that didnt have a shaft but almost all of the large ones did. you can take the number 9 mine tour and there is a 2 compartment elevator shaft with the cages locked on the level the tour takes you on. also you can check these pictures from our site to see what the elevator landing looks like underground:

as for springdale, heres some pics of it from our site:

also check out the middle creek shaft:

Chris

Thanks for the info, I never knew that about the area's mines.

The pictures you guys take are amazing!

Also, I can only view the pictures on your website with XP and not Vista.

hmm, well in that case load xp onto the comp with vista, its junk  we have vista on the computer at work, it blocks everything! thats probably why the pics wont load. at work half the time it even blocks our internet! sometimes it lets the dsl work, other times it blocks it and wont load internet explorer or firefox.... junk!

no offense if youre a vista fan :) and thanks for the comment on our photos.

I stopped by Springdale and explored the Mahanoy Tunnel the other day. I didn't take any photos of the tunnel but I walked around the fan houses and inside the tunnel. I thought it looked in pretty bad shape. I think at some point Reading & Northern will have to make repairs.

Anyway, here's the photos of Springdale:

I noticed a building still standing near where the breaker was located. Was that the fan house?

It'll be a shame if this site is lost........

I saw Chris on the History Channel last night!!!

So is the Springdale shaft easy to spot? can you see it from the road? I was thinking of heading up that way soon and I want to hit it while I'm there.

Really easy to find 8)

Unusual short headframe vs. traditional styles.

another thing did anyone notice the small coal stove inside the springdale hoist house its completely disconnected i thought abt finding out abt getting it and using it to heat my garage, so at least i can have a piece of springdale related history (ok mabee thats somewhat of a stretch) put back into operation in a useful capacity it would be a great conversation piece anyway.

A large company owns that site. We have been trying to preserve the head frame & relocate it to Ohio. We have played phone tag numerous times.

Ideally it should be preserved on site as it adds to and it part of the character of that area, ....With the natral patina of course
