while out in Altoona for Railfest this weekend I took the family to the Seldom Seen mine tour. It was great. It scared my little guy at first, partly because is pretty much unpolished and very "real."

He loved it after our guide reassured him.

The train ride is awesome, and there are tracks leading off into dark tunnels that seem to suggest a lot more to see. I will post pics later this week and also describe the inclined plane they once used.

Great mine tour. :!:

It is off the beaten path is why it is very realistic in my book.

Sometimes not being the most well known or visited tour isn't a bad thing 8)

the only way to do that is create an earthquake out there and shift the mountain at least 45 degrees up!

Right you are a flat pitch miner at heart hence the passion for the northern field. You are just afraid to visit because you might transfer from an Anty miner to a Bitty miner.

Great pics 8) 8) This is why we love the bituminous mines lots of underground workings and lots of equipment all pulling together to crank out high tonnage of coal produced.

Thanks for posting up the pictures. Some very good shots! Yeah, that does appear to be a pretty impressive mine tour. Given the amount of rail, it adds for a pretty neat experience.

Excellent photos. One of these days, I'll have to come back out east and go check that place out. The seem to have a decent collection of equipment. The underground portion of the mine looks neat too.
