hi,

The steam train ride in Phillipsburg,NJ is starting a mine attraction that passengers can stop over at. I discussed with Greg, figuring it was an iron mine, but the location is not right for that.

Turns out is a newly constructed "trough" where kids can "pan for gold." oh well.

My son wants to do it, and I did love that when I was a kid and visited Colorado, but it ain't mining.

And I am afraid it will start kids panning in NJ creeks where all sorts of sharps, mutated fish and body parts are likely to pan out.

Hi Rob,

If it encourages kids to develop an interest in minerals and geology, then I think its a good idea. Unfortunately I never did any "gold panning" when I was younger but I'm sure I would've enjoyed it. There actually is an iron mine in Phillipsburg, it is called the Marble Mountain Mine (http://www.ironminers.com/ironmines/mar ... mine-1.htm). It was a minor operation that worked hematite as its ore.

Robert,

Hey, yeah I didn't get a chance to investigate this at all. But I thought you were saying that it was right off the railroad?

I didn't think it was the Marble Mountain mine because that was quite a ways up the mountain. It was a cool discovery, but it was a bit hard to find as you just have to walk through lots of brush to get through..
