Been toying around with this idea for a little while now. Montgomery county Va has anthracite in it. Been wondering what I would need to open one up. It wouldn't be a big operation but, could make a little extra money on the side. My dad used to dig house coal in the 60's for extra cash.

well, 7 years underground to be a foreman, money, the land, the mineral rights, the permits to mine, drainage permits, more money, equipment, and after you get all that you still need the willingness to deal with msha!

I"m just talking about digging a hole in the side of a mountain to dig less than a thounsand tons. I guess you all call it bootlegging. I've got the foreman card but I don't think I'll need it. Federal law says that if you employee less than five men in less than a 24 hour period then you don't need a mine foreman.

in that case some equipment, a good location and the willingness to get dirty, remember everything is legal as long as you dont get caught!

interesting...... i never heard that before. that could be an interesting find there! i guess you would have to check into state laws. in pa, there are differences in fed and state laws. you must obey the more strict of the 2.

so if the feds say you dont need a foreman, and the state says you do, then you do. just for example, thats how it works here. if it were me.....well............
