I didn't see this question address anywhere.

Are there any suggestions on cleaning up carbide lamps? I picked up a couple which look to be in decent shape, but could use a bit if maintenance.

first thing to do is get a real fine wire, i use a single bristle from a wire brush, and clean the tip. most lamps the tip just pulls out. give it a slight twist and it will pull out. second make sure the gasket is good between the lamp and base or it will catch fire! (this in a room in front of hundred people at a presentation in the dark really gets their attention!) yea that happened........ anyways, mine was bad so i made a new one out of cork. most are dry rotted and allow the gas to escape there. thats pretty much it, they are pretty simple, make sure the valve is free, clean them up and give them a try.

any idea on how much if anything the original box adds value wise to the the value of a lamp. I am asking because I have a justrite carbide lamp (a earlier brass one not the later plastic kind) in its original box.

i really have no idea on what they are worth. best thing to do is put it on ebay with an unbelievably high reserve that can not be viewed. that way it wont sell and youll see what people bid it up to. but, in the miracle case someone does win..... you did good!

While trying to find carbide. And an old caving guy I spoke to asked if I had paid more than $100 . I told him that I got two decent lamps and a soft cap for about $60 total. His comment was I stole them.

If you have the "Streamlined" version of Justrite, these are quite common, and I would go so far as to say you stole them! :) If, on the other hand, you have a horizontal style, then you did get a good deal. You can learn a lot at:
