UGM, Ironminers and Abandoned Mines.net all meet up at the same mine unscheduled. the battle ground is getting small boys! it was good to finally meet you dan, sorry it was brief and yous guys had to go find more holes with that guy. did you make it to the airshaft in that one we met you at, and were you responsible for the still lit glow stick at the bottom we found? as we were coming out i guess a part of your team was going in but they didnt stop to talk to us.....

Now if you just had the Ohio guys there then that would have been unhooked.

I had a feeling we would bump into each other sooner or later. Good to finally meet you coal guys too.

The glowstick, thats one of miner Bob's signature tactics, we left 2 more around a few other holes today in Rosendale.

Is this the glow stick you are talking about?

Bad picture (didn't have the tripod ready), but I think this is the one you are talking about!

yea i was wandering out in front and found that airshaft. when i climbed up into the bottom of it, i saw this lit glow stick and was like holy sh*t! i threw it out at the guys and they said, i didnt know you had a glow stick.......... i said, i didnt!

that place is simply amazing, i can see why you guys are starting to focus on the limestone area of ny. not to worry its not someplace we will be traveling to often (thats your job  ) but i think that everyone should see that at least once! thats the first time ive been speechless in a mine in a long time! next time if IM and ABM meet up i think there will be enough men and space for a baseball game underground

Limestone mines are amazing ! I was thinking the same thing when I went to the active ones in Missouri. I couldn't believe how good the roof was with such little support.

yea the pillar to space ratio was something. the pillars were hour glass shaped which was neat. a pillar that size in coal would lead to some turmoil on the surface!

OK.

For what purpose is limestone mined underground?

I well know the uses for Limestone:

Roads
Cement Manufacture
Agriculture lime.
Building Stone
etc.

It is just that the uses are the same but the stone is deeper?

Pardon me sounding like a broken record, but in my vocabulary-

Coal is mined, Limestone is quarried. And the real good stuff is used for buildings facades.

Hey in Indiana we even feature it in our movies. Anyone every heard of "Breaking Away"

I'll give you one point thou.

Mines are neat, Quarries are just big holes. At least our Coal mines get reclaimed. Quarries are there to stay.

I understood it was underground.

I'm just trying to get a handle on why it was mined underground.

Also please don't take my comments to imply Midwestern methods are superior. The geology is different, The time period may be different. And the minerals are different.

I'm just trying to add comment via contrast.

The reason it is mined underground in some causes is that there are huge pockets of limestone fairly deep that go on for miles. I know the Missouri Mine that I was at the terrain above ground was not suitable for stripping & a major envinmental impact if they did.
