While I am a little behind on the history of these sites right now, so I'll give you what I have so far. The majority of the limestone that was mined out of these sites were used for Hydraulic Cement. Since the type of limestone in that area was high in cement rock, these mines were perfect for producing natural or hydraulic cement. Pretty much branded as Rosendale Cement, these mines produced cement from the late 1800's to as late as the 1960's.

Most of the Rosendale Cement mines were known for having pitch in the seams, some seams are vertical or near vertical and keep going underground. Given the technology of the time, geology of the area, mountains in the area, and the fact that there are many towns based in these areas, stripping was really not an option here.

In addition, since the surrounding rock is much stronger than top and bottom rock of coal, your ratio of pillar to mined rock is a lot less while still maintaining the structural integrity of the mine.

Thanks Greg,

I did a bit of searching and found that the limestone for natural cement has a higher clay content. Making it a mineral unto itself.

also, i noticed all the drippers hitting the ground made small puddles of cement when it dried up, all over the place. if you stripped this out the first time it rained you would have all kinds of a mess.

Discussion Borad can be great fun, especially when they force you to do a bit of research.

I'm going to have to have a bit of Crow Stew. I was talking to a guy in the Indiana (Demensional ) Limestone Industry over the weekend. The conversation started out on Cement Limestones evolved to the fact that Indiana does have three UNDERGROUND Limestone mines.

The largest is minig high purity Calcium Carbonate and shipping it to a Coal -Fired Power Plant for use in the scrubbers.

The things you learn when you ask questions.

Ohh yes.. Agreed.. Asking questions always brings you lots of unexpected answers. Limestone mines are our newest endeavor, but we are always going out to find more and more stuff. A lot to see out there.
