and this is what happens when after days of flooding a cap on the top of an airshaft decides it doesnt want to hold the millions of gallons of water back anymore:

Chris,

Very interesting photo essay.

There is a real simple fix to some of these problems.

Just find a susceptable area and build a Super Walmart!!

Worked where I live. Walmart picked a site at the intersection of a 4-lane and the main road out of town. Anyone with half a brain knew it was right in the area where there had been heavy underground mining in the 30's.

During early ground work they started having problems. They worked for weeks and pumped thousands of yards of grout to stabilize the site Local rumor has it they back filled almost a mile back to town.

Here is a map link. The blue areas are known workings.

Ha! thats funny because they're building one right now over a bad spot in west Scranton... they already hit i think 2 slopes doing the excavation, and whatever they were doing in all their digging and blasting ended up causing black damp to start seeping into peoples basements not far from the site.... i heard anyway that there were complaints and the operation had to be assessed by the Office of Surface Mining. Something like that happened.

I tried to get down there to see the stuff they dug into but they had already filled over it.

Speaking of which - Chris -, I just drove through there the other day and it looks like they dug through and must have filled in that shaft for the Dodge Colliery there.

hmm, interesting, the one by the purple wash house? also, banks where youre talking about is behind that trucking place right across from 190? anyways maybe tony will chime in here but thats where we got in that manway before they filled it all in. also to "stablilze" the ground they had a crane with a huge weight on it and just dropped it on the ground all day for weeks to cause subsidences. guess it worked as the entire area dropped several feet! hopefully tony will see this and elaborate more on it. i forget what colly that was.

I remember that trip. That manway was spooky. That was part of the Sloan,Hampton and Central. The manway was tthe Sloan # 156 slope. I took a walk through there a few weeks ago looking for the # 133 but as is typical with the Northern field it now has a warehouse on top of it. I saw the work at the new Wal Mart. Chris and I looked at the shaft a( Dodge shaft) few years ago. Fenced off because it is continually settling. Also back by 190 they built a warehouse on top of a slope. Took off the whole corner of the building. ( Sloan 150 slope) when it let go.

I just saw the photos post... wasn't that building behind the subsided shaft there until just recently? I fear wal-mart may have gotten it..

The building in the pic was torn down in the 80's. The purple building is out of the pic. It burned down in the summer of 07.

You'd think people would just learn from these obvious mistakes and not build over old shafts! Come on people! The idiot developers getting rich off of these AMLs should have to pay for at least 50 percent cent of anything that goes wrong with the properties built on said lands, the other half should be paid by the morons that buy propertiy without doing their homework. I mean how dumb can people be, if there's a void, unless its very securely timbered up and backfilled, it's gonna cave.
