Does anybody remember the accident that happened in Scranton down from The current VA hospital where if memory serves me correct,, a crane fell down a mineshaft and a worker fell down the shaft and a major rescue attempt was done to recover the body? Any help in this matter in regard to what mine and what colliery it belonged to is most appreciated.

Go to the coal mine photo section. And take a look at the Pine Brook shaft photo.

Thank you very much. I remember wealking down the street fron the then Scranton State Hospital (now the VA hospital) and walking across that railroad bridge and watching the recovery scene. If my memory serves me correctly, his last name was White and he was from Laflin but I wish I knew more details.

The shaft collapsed on May May 21,1982. It was part of the Pine Brook colliery. The breaker was destroyed by fire sometime in the 1940's. It sat adjacent to the shaft on the site. The shaft itself was 335 ft. deep and connected with the #2 Dunmore. But was water filled a mere 69 ft below the surface. The unfortunate 38 yr old Jerry White of Laflin was standing 20 ft. away from the shaft when the retaining walls gave way. Ultimately creating the huge hole often photographed. A crane also went into the shaft, And had to be removed.
