Good shots!

Yep the rock dust is always the worst enemy no matter what you do with the lighting. Especially in active mines.

Did you make it to cutting the face?

I'm thinking that the rock dust made the pics possible. The camera was on full auto, and the metering system was throwing a fit.

About half the time it was screamng "Too Dark". But on the fly, we figured out that if you gave if a spot of light with the helmet light that was enough for it to set-up on and get a decent exposure. But there were serveral times it took a couple of shots for the auto focus to get it right. But we were in a gray area even having the camera there. So take what you can get and be glad for it.

This D40 is spoiling me, big time. I learned on a Pentax K1000 and a Nikon FM2. Both full manual. Now I have to think about what the camera is thinking.

My miner friend and I are planning on a trip out. We are just waiting on another 3-mine tour. Make the tour on a Saturday and book two seats. Plan something for the Sunday Afternoon ( after church) and we might stay over an extra day.

I think those are good pics. That is one clean mine. No gob on the ribs. Must be pretty hard coal. I think the coal hauler looks awesome in Joy orange. So much better than the white before Joy bought out stamler.
