Took a quick look in here while visiting some RR tunnels:

Nice.. Welcome to Iron Mining! Where was that one located? How big was it? Did you run into any workings in that mine?

Thanks. It was the High Ledge Mine:

I only went in about 25 feet before the water splashed into my rubber boots and soaked both feet! I turned back after that, but Alyssha made it to the shaft. How does this mine compare in size to other (still accessible) underground iron mines?

Ahh nice. For some reason I read the message that you were exploring Railroad tunnels in PA. Well if you look on the site, there are quite a few iron mines larger than this mine. Unfortunately in NJ though, most of the iron mines which are still accessible are not very large. Don't get me wrong, as you know, there are some pretty big Iron Mines in NJ (Mt. Hope, Dickerson, Washington, Scrub Oaks, Hibernia, Richard), but a lot of them are not accessible.

Which railroad tunnels were you looking at? There's a few good ones in NJ worth seeing..

Thanks for the reply. We should get together sometime to see some of the larger mines outside of NJ. We shot in Oxford Tunnel in NJ:

We also wanted to go to Manunka Chunk and Rosewood but ran out of time.

I thought that mine looked familiar but then I started thinking, did one of the railroad tunnels intersect a mine? I cannot recall where but I remember hearing about a railroad tunnel somewhere in the southern anthracite region that cut right into abandoned mine tunnels. It was a pleasant surprise to spot Washington Prospect along the old Erie line to Port Jervis (http://www.ironminers.com/ironmines/washington-prospect-1.htm).

I think the one in the southern anthracite field is the Mahanoy Tunnel:

Must have been fun finding the prospect tunnel!
