SPORTSMAN,

Welcome to the forum and thanks a lot for sharing your photos. Some pretty good shots. When we were visiting that area, we heard about this place that you posted. We had other Limestone mines on our list and didn't have the time to find those, but it certainly is a photogenic site. I think we might put these on the top of our list when we go back there, as it does look pretty interesting.

Too bad those kilns are deteriorating so badly, but I'm sure they were still a great site. I also love the rail haulage right into the water. Its neat seeing things like that still intact. Pretty cool.

Nice photos Sportsman. It is sad the kilns are crumbling but documentary pictures like yours will be priceless when generations ahead look back. The photos of rails declining into a water-filled shaft are classic, but unfortunately rather uncommon south of the Kingston area. Please share more pictures if you would like.

Thanks folks, for the warm welcome.

On Thursday, April 16th, we'll be visiting the Rosendale area again.

We'll be meeting at the College Diner on Route 299 in Highland / New Paltz at 0900 hours for some breakfast. We'll then mountain bike down the old Wallkill Valley Rail Trail to the site of the pictures from the original post.

With some more folks I'll feel a little safer about venturing a little deeper.

Then we hope to explore the F.O. Warren / Consolidated Concrete Complex.

Then to the "Cathedral", a mine so big we can ride our bikes inside.

Finally to the overpass to view Joppenburgh Mountian, to try to spot the collapsed mines.

After, a nice lunch and perhaps a couple of microbrews at the Gilded Otter.

I'll be in a black Ford F-250, so if anyone wishes to join us, please feel free.

Pics to be posted upon return.

Good luck with your mission. I would love to see and hear the results of it. Today won't really work for me, but I hope you get a good turn out and get some great pictures. Please post them up when you get a chance as we'd love to see them.

I also love the cool down, have a micro brew for me too!

Sportsman, I look forward to hearing the results of your adventure and any pictures you might have taken. On another note, I wanted to add that our "missions" not only include a visit to photo-document a mine, but always include a visit to a great place to eat (preferably Italian) in conclusion. There we typically bring our cameras into the restaurant, preview each others photos while indulging in frothy brew (preferably home-brewed) and discussing the day's adventure.

Have you ever been to the Gilded Otter in New Paltz?

I can't comment on their Italian food, but their Jambalaya is noteworthy.

Did i mention they are a microbrewery.

Our usual stop after one of our adventures!

Sportsman just posted up a new set of photos for these, please see here:

Yes you were very warm to the mines... ;-)

Yeah when we were up there, we took some photos of the silo's and surrounding structures. I checked out some of the silo's but I didn't get to see the chutes. The cement bag was a great find! That would have been real neat!

We also checked out the house, it had a lot of government paperwork inside. I'm not sure we had a full understanding on what the house was used for.

We didn't find the huts. Those look pretty wild though.

On the way home I stopped at the Lawrenceville Mine. I didn't have any lights and was by myself so i didn't go far.

How'd this trip go? It's certainly a pretty neat mine! Take any pictures?
