Coal land to transform into hardwood forest

BY STEPHEN J. PYTAK
POTTSVILLE REPUBLICAN & HERALD
April 29, 2009

MOUNT PLEASANT — Federal, state and county agencies plan to reclaim two acres of county-owned coal land in Foster Township near the Schuylkill County Airport.

On Friday, they will begin planting about 1,200 trees in the area.

Unlike most reclamation projects in which grass is planted, trees will be planted in this reforestation initiative, the first of its kind in the anthracite region. And it will increase the value of the land, according to Michael Myers of the Office of Surface Mining/Volunteer In Service To America for the Schuylkill Headwaters Association, Pottsville.

While it might not be considered a great use of money, it is interesting that they are planting American Chestnut trees. I wonder if they will be the new Hybrids that are resistant to blight? That could be pretty neat in 100 years...

I won't be around though...

Is that a typo in the article? Two as in (2) acres? They pack that many trees into two acres they better be resistant to lots of things.

This is a good thing. Given the current Administration and their hate for Coal and mountain top removal.

Just for refrence this company isn't stripping away the top of the mountain ala bitty style they just happen to be on top of the mountain mining a couple of veins.
