This past weekend we decided to include a mine into the agenda before climbing to the peak of Mt. Marcy, New York's tallest mountain. While not a particularly large mining operation nor commercially important, the Rock Pond Mine is very interesting nonetheless. Nestled within a beautiful wilderness area including small ponds, towering pine and white birch trees, and a backdrop of mountains, the mine is worth a visit if just for the hike itself. The mine was operated only briefly in the early 1900's but is still archeologically relevant and well preserved with a very notable artifact being an intact steam boiler.

Enjoy the photos! http://www.ironminers.com/mineforum/viewtopic.php?p=111359

Unfortunately I don't have gps coordinates because I already had a good idea of where it was. It is located in Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area in Ticonderoga, NY. Like many of the mines in the Hudson Valley and Ramapo Mountains, this mine is publicly accessible, on a marked trail and is also a geo cache site. The cache box was actually in the way of one of my pictures. I moved it out of the way to take my shot, then returned the cache to its proper location and we signed it. :) Try this map...
