I got a whole box of materials from MSHA last week. I was wondering how they taylor the Pa. Anthracite training.

I don't know if they still show the greatest of all MSHA productions, "How to SLAM risks" or something like that but it is a all time classic in my book. The only other production that even comes close to that is the one they did on proper labeling of containers.

(Chris, I'm not trying to be agrumentive. Really, I'm not)

What office governs Anthracite New Miner Training? I want a persons name and phone number?

I spoke to a guy at:

Bureau of Mine Safety
5 West Laurel Boulevard
Pottsville, PA 17901
570-621-3139

Now he may be an idiot, but, he inidcated that "new miner" was MSHA based and should be the same Pa. Anty = Pa Bitty = Ind. Bitty.

I have a copy of the Part 48 Underground Instructors Guide, all 5 inches of it. And a couple of modules do indicate the differences in Anty and Bitty. But, MSHA does not seem to have a seperate course either. ??

The base question is:

If an Ind. (bitty) New Miner will not work in Pa. Anty. Would a Pa. Anty work for an Ind. Bitty ?

Best thing I could tell you to is to talk to the powers that be in Indiana. The more I think about it I think the new miner training is good nationwide. But to be employed as a actual Anthracite Coal Miner in PA you have to work in the Anthracite Mines of PA for two years.

An Indiana mine will hire an inexperienced miner with 32 hours of training ( plus 8 hours on-site ). If it is an MSHA approved course it's good.

The guy I talked to in Pottsville indicated that was the same for Pa.

BUT a New-hire is considered a laborer for the first two years. Then can get their Pa. Miner Cert.

For practical purposes, I fail to see a distinction. Laborer and "miner" are both in a mine working. It may have to do with specific task allowed or the amount of supervision.

doug, you are correct that a person can be employed in a mine after 32 hours of msha plus 8 on site training but to recieve your Pa Anthracite miners certification you must be emplyed in an anthracite mine at minimum of 2 years. The Pa anthracite miners certification is a step above and beyond the new miner training required by MSHA. I believe it is for doing blasting along with other things without supervision by a certified miner or a foreman.

I really do like the idea, however.

1) I don't know any mines hiring,

2) The commute is hellacious.

3) I only have time for a limited number of 4-day courses.

4) There is that little detail about the difference between Anty 32-hour and MSHA 32-hour.

Then let's figure out how to put one of the fancy anty mines here or tie a chain around your mountains and drag them about 10 hours closer.

It is a well-known fact that you want a mine in your backyard. ( Might be hard in the apartment complex). But what about my backyard?

Maybe I should check my neighbor's well drill records. There is a good chance of a couple of veins of coal within the top 150 feet. And I own the mineral rights. It's just kind of hard to get a permit for only an acre and a half.
