A question came up during my recent class. I wasn't sure the instructor understood the question. So I'll ask our resident Electricians.

When the primary side drops out for what ever reason, does this reset the secondary disconnects and force a manual reset of each seccondary when the primary is restored?

This would make it a bit unusual, but I can see safety reasons for it working this way.

I'm not sure about the underground power centers doug but I know the surface equivilante does drop out when you loose your primary but that is apples to orange comparison.

Are you talking about an underground power center? If so, the only ones I have ever saw had disconnects on the primary ( line side). Unless it has a contact switch then never saw one other than a splitter box then it would not throw the manual disconnects. It should knock power back to the closest line splitter or main substation if there are no other splitters. I hope I may have answered this if not Pm and I'll give you my # and I'll try to explain.

The more I think about it I believe our oil switches drop out via a undervoltage relay or undervoltage release coil when power is interupted but I'm not sure about the deep mine power centers here in the Anthracite. I think I remember seeing something in the Anthracite mine laws about a undervoltage release requirement but that could have been for high voltage. Our draglines use 7200 volts and our drills use 4160 volts so that makes for one hell of a good extension cord to each machine!

I'm referring to Underground.

I think this will answer the question. If surface has undervoltage dropout. I assume that U/G does also.

The breakers will have a UV also will the oil switches but, the visual disconnects do not, pretty sure.

okay, if i understand the question the scenario is this...
the power company cuts power for some reason (tree on the line), the substation looses power, all the surface breakers in the substation will knock and need reset including the underground power, also when the underground power falls out it knocks all the breakers on the UG powercenter... all of them have to be put back in manually, just like the surface breakers.

the primary always depends on what the secondary side of the flux capacitor is doing.

Banks, goes out of town for a few days and things get really deep.

I always thought it was you keeping him in bounds.

Guess I was wrong.
